The museum received the 2014 annual Koizumi Fumio Prize.

Established in April, 1995 as the first municipal museum of musical instruments by Hamamatsu City, this museum has celebrated the 20th anniversary this April.
The museum has introduced world instruments and their culture with an equal and unbiased perspective for 20 years and has received the 26th (2014) annual Koizumi Fumio Prize for Ethnomusicology (called Koizumi Prize) for the activity. This is the world-leading museum of musical instruments that exhibits 1,300 pieces of world musical instruments regularly and introduces the instruments and their splendid world through the variety of activities: special exhibitions, lecture concerts, evening salon concerts, gallery talks, guided tours, courses of lectures, workshops, mobile museum for schools, and CD and DVD production etc.
